Heart Health at Lane 8?

Couple updates as I type from my family physician’s waiting room. I’ve been a patient here for 25 years, since we first moved to Central Florida.

My visit is over, and I wanted to post before I got too busy.

Had an excellent five-mile run this morning. At the end, I planned a one-mile time-trial. Clocked 5:24. Not bad. No pain.

My family physician tells me there are risks, of course, for a second cortisone shot. Heck, there are risks for virtually everything. Driving to work. The wrong person eating too many peanuts can die.

My podiatrist makes another cortisone shot sound like a no brainer. My physical therapist makes it sound like the plague.

On top of all this, I crank out a great practice mile time without pain. And yesterday, I felt the pain was getting worse.

I told my wife I feel like I’m on a roller coaster.

So, I’ll pray for wisdom and guidance. Not only for me, but for everyone.

Thirty-two days, eh?

Only thirty-two days until I drive to the airport, hop on a flight to Helsinki, and put myself on the world stage.

Scary as Halloween, if you want to know the truth.

Perfect!

Perfect?

Yep.

Few things will clean your arteries better than being scared to death.

This is one of several significant reasons that I’m on this journey. It’s truly not about me, but about practicing what I preach.

One of my favorite quotes and I’m sorry I can’t remember who said it:

“It matters little to walk to do the preaching, if not the walking, is the preaching”.

I hope you get this. It’s a really profound statement.

USATF CEO Doug Logan’s Blog

USATF CEO Doug Logan has a blog called Shin Splints.

Over the weekend, I watched several hours of the US Outdoor National Championships.

There were some great races, in both men’s and women’s events. No world records.

But overall, these athletes performed well, in qualifying for the World Championships in Berlin, later this year.

The main point I wanted to make is that Doug Logan, the CEO of USATF, has a blog.

OK, do you have a cell phone? A computer? A postal mailbox?

Ya with me?

Blogs are free and fairly easy, like anything else, once you practice.

I should know, I have five that I write in every single day.

Obsessive? Compulsive? Focused? Disciplined?

Probably a little bit of “all of the above”.

Lane 8 on Sunday

Lane 8 on Sunday. Today is not a day of rest.

Why?

Because there are 38 days remaining until I step up to the starting line.

The World Championships!

Can you believe it?

I can’t.

I watched the USA National Track & Field Championships last night, on ESPN.

LaShawn Merritt, the 2008 Olympic 400 meter champion, easily won the 400 in 44.50.

His rival, Jeremy Wariner, ran his semi-final 200 meter race. Jeremy is not running the 400 this meet. He automatically qualifies for the World Championships in the 400, because he is the reigning world champ.

Jeremy has completely dominated the 400 for the past decade, until last year at the Olympic 400 meter finals, when he lost to LaShawn.

LaShawn has emerged as America’s next great 400 star. He turned 23 yesterday.

By the way, America dominates the world stage at 400 meters. We took Olympic gold, silver and bronze in 2008. It was not the first Olympics where we swept the top three places.

Jeremy is working on his 200 speed, in order to work on his 400 speed.

I can’t wait to see the showdown later this year at the world championships in Berlin.

In Track & Field circles, we haven’t seen a showdown like this in quite some time.

Lane 8 World Championships?

It’s a modern day David versus Goliath story.

Hey, had a great workout this morning at the Bill Spoon Stadium at Dr. Phillips High School. While I was training for the World Championships, there were about ten Central Florida High School footbal teams there for light scrimmages.

No pads or tackling. Just running offensive plays while the defense tried to look sharp.

So, you know me, I shot three very short, and maybe a bit humorous, jeff noel You Tube videos. Take a look as I sweat and breath heavily after the 2nd, 3rd and 4th 400 meter intervals.

Ain’t it great to be alive?
