If we quit we will never know

Yesterday morning.

Windermere Prep Athletics
Yesterday, a Sunday.

If we quit we’ll never know.

Have given much thought to canceling the trip to France in two weeks.

The Father’s Day injury has literally cancelled the last 40 days of training. Even if i’ve recovered from the injury, the lost conditioning and strength edge i had is gone.

If i quit i’ll never know.

So i haven’t quit, in spite of the (unnecessary) impending embarrassment from weak performance.

Each day it’s the same two choices

Toddler chalk art on sidewalk
Photo from three days ago. As kids, walking took too long, so we ran.

Each day it’s the same two choices.

  1. Step forward with a healthy conviction about our personal responsibility for being active, eating well, and resting well.
  2. Step back into the (delusional) safety of our comfort zone of apathy, indifference, and excuses.

It really is this simple.

Either choice is sustainable for a lifetime.

What if we don’t have enough wherewithal?

Disneyland Dream Suite
Everyone should have an impossible wellness dream.

Without a powerful, clear, concise, and compelling personal wellness vision, there’s no way to fight off the relentless demands on our time and energy. There’s not enough ammunition to slay the “quitting” dragon.

Not enough wherewithal to become an example, rather than a warning.

The regret from never knowing is insidiously haunting.

The roundtrip walk from the car to lunch was 2.5 miles. Walking past this group of fun loving young men we spotted the red letters on the back of their tee-shirts spelling, p-a-r-t-y.

Creative. Fun.

Shared with the 14-year old lunch companion how much fun it is to put on your jeans and they fit perfectly, maybe even a tad loose.

Decent chance all of these men will regret not knowing this joy as they age.

How do we make progress when we aren’t making progress?

(photo: Quitter? Just yesterday caught this image walking to the car while leaving Gold’s Gym)

The challenge with progress is how to keep making it when we aren’t making progress. Temptations to quit are relentless, and insidiously small and powerful.

If we remember only one thing today let it be this – this too shall pass. But it will return tomorrow to try and defeat us again.

One day at a time.

We become an example or a warning by our daily routine.
