Each day it’s the same two choices

Toddler chalk art on sidewalk
Photo from three days ago. As kids, walking took too long, so we ran.

Each day it’s the same two choices.

  1. Step forward with a healthy conviction about our personal responsibility for being active, eating well, and resting well.
  2. Step back into the (delusional) safety of our comfort zone of apathy, indifference, and excuses.

It really is this simple.

Either choice is sustainable for a lifetime.

Never intended to run a half-marathon yesterday

Masters Track World Championships starting blocks
August 2009, Lahti, Finland, Masters Track & Field World Championships.

Never intended to run a half-marathon yesterday.

But am no longer surprised at logging three miles of warmup before the actual track workout. And three miles of cool down is also no longer a surprise.

Just warming up and cooling down is farther than i ran between 1999 – 2014. Retirement blew things up.

Simply running enough 400-meter intervals, with a 400-meter walk between each can cover six miles, if you do 12 x 400-meters.

Two weeks into track work and the times are coming down. Slow and steady.

Should i announce it or keep it a secret?

Amateur photo of Denver's Rocky Mountains
Those aren’t clouds, they are snow capped mountains from last week’s run through Denver, May 15.

Should i announce it or keep it a secret?

Training for 2015 Nationals and Worlds.

On one hand it will sound arrogant.

On the other hand, it takes guts to believe you can compete well against the best the world has to offer.

One announcement can simultaneously turn people off and remarkably inspire others.

Worrying about our health is tougher than this

Sidewalk next to Tibet Butler Nature Preserve
i run 400 meters down, and walk back. Then i repeat this process 11 more times.

Doing 12 brisk 400 meter runs with only a four minute walk between each is tough.

Worrying about our health is tougher than actually doing the work called:

  • Regular exercise
  • Balanced nutrition
  • Adequate rest

The paradox of worry is that our effort is greater when we do nothing but worry.

Another way of saying the same thing is: Quitting doesn’t make it easier, quitting makes it harder.

Back to 100 feet above sea level.

Last week in Denver it was nice to simply run slow and enjoy the new scenery.

No intervals. No gym. No pushing the pace or heart rate.

But back behind Disney’s Magic Kingdom, all that changes in an hour.
