My favorite hiker of all time.

If you don’t exercise your body, you never notice your chains.

How long do you plan for?

Apple watch
During this 3-hour excursion, walked seven miles. There were stops (clock keeps ticking) along the way for pull-ups, planks, dips, animal observations. The no-gym gym workout took an additional 20-30 minutes before leaving home to walk.

While walking this morning, thought of friends, family, colleagues, and neighbors who’ve committed to an exercise regime.

At least a 40-year observation.

And then some questions reflexively began, effortlessly:

  1. How long do you plan to exercise?
  2. How long do you plan to eat better?
  3. How long do you plan to get better rest?

There’s only one smart, over-focused answer.

i don’t even need to say it.

How many years is your active streak?

Teddy Bear at Track Lane 8
Lane 8, in the finals, at the world championships. You can come in dead last and still be the 8th fastest in the world.

How many years have you been consistently exercising, eating well and resting well?

It’s been 22 for me.

Most of the time I don’t have much fun. The rest of the time I don’t have any fun at all.

People think i love to run. If you’re lucky, half your life exercise will feel like a get-to-do and the other half will feel like a have-to-do. Aim for a minimum of 51% get to and 49% have to.

There have been months, even years, where exercise and running was 95% pure joy. And there were months, even years, where it was a slog. Embrace with gratitude that you have a body that works.

Do you play to the buzzer?

Played the sunset until the buzzer. When the pinks, oranges, and reds turned to grey, the mosquitoes were the buzzer.

Do you play to the buzzer?

The only time it makes sense to play to the buzzer is when the game is close.

But what about when the opposing team has an insurmountable lead?

Then what?

And why?
