Have You Tried Acting?

Finals. World Championships.
Finals. World Championships.

You can (but make excuses not to) embrace my tag line here at Lane 8: If your goal isn’t impossible, you’re not reaching high enough.

Or you can subscribe to a more famous person’s quote. Either way, we’re saying the same thing.

“All that is necessary to break the spell of inertia and frustration is this: Act as if it were impossible to fail.” – Dorothea Brande

Dorothea Brande wrote the quintessential how-to-write book, Becoming a Writer, which was among the first to address every writer’s core problem: How to sit down and let the words flow. Her book, published in 1934, remains in print today.

1 Thing That Is A Must

Senior Olympics 2009 In Finland
Senior Olympics 2009 In Finland

Quite simply, the one thing that is a must is this:

The extra effort.

“In the end, it’s extra effort that separates a winner from second place. It starts with complete command of the fundamentals. Then desire, determination, discipline, & self-sacrifice. Finally, it takes a great deal of love, fairness & respect for your fellow man. Put all these together, and even if you don’t win, how can you lose?” —  Jesse Owens

Lacking Motivation?

It Doesn't Matter How Fast You Are
It Doesn't Matter How Fast You Are

“I sometimes think that running has given me a glimpse of the greatest freedom a man can ever know, because it results in the simultaneous liberation of both mind and body……The runner does not know why he runs. He only knows that he must run……We run, not because we think it is doing us good, but because we enjoy it and cannot help ourselves.” — Roger Bannister, 1956

Boost Your Willpower

The Road To Excellence Has No Finish Line

The road to excellence has no finish line.

This Everyday Health article basically says what I’ve been saying all along here at Lane 8:

  1. Pick one impossible goal, not several
  2. Start small
  3. Be creative with your motivation
  4. Find a million ways to keep it alive
  5. Don’t quit

Simple?  Yes.

Easy?  Not on your life.

Everyday Courage Has Few Witnesses

All Proof Destroyed?
All Proof Destroyed?

“Everyday courage has few witnesses. But yours is no less noble because no drum beats for you, and no crowds shout your name.” Robert Louis Stevenson

Maybe you believe in yourself, or maybe you don’t.

The more days that you go without quitting what you you really want to do, the stronger your belief will become.

There really is no other way to change.

You simply must have resolve. A goal is not enough.

You must want this for the rest of your life.

Remember, your everyday courage will have very few witnesses.

How’s that sound?
