Seven months of zero to low mileage got tested

Wellness journey
Yesterday, first time in seven months running five miles… 8.03kilometers equals 5 miles.

Seven months of zero to low mileage.

Stopped running entirely in April and May.

The only reason i began running this summer was to help our son, you know, easy, 10-12 minutes per mile, one, two miles at most.

When he joined the Cross-Country team in August, i continued running two to three miles – three times a week – because the running was pain-free. The reason i stopped running was simple. It was painful.

Wanted to try one last ditch thing to eradicate chronic right ankle/calf pain.

i planned (and was excited to know it would be a 2016 milestone) to run five miles and the pace was slow enough to remain pain-free, and just enjoy the privilege.

Running with no pain is insanely joyful

At 8am i texted my Cracker Barrel lunch partner, “i thought this said, no omelette.”

Running with no pain is insanely joyful. Yesterday’s 4.5 easy-pace miles were pain free.

To run pain free is better than competing at the highest Master’s level.

PS. Competing at the highest Master’s level is also insanely joyful.

i wonder if there’s a solution

We decided to go out in public yesterday despite the terrorism.

Under our exterior is an emotional ache that’s difficult to describe.

We had a decent walk yesterday before dinner.

i wonder if there’s a solution. Not to terrorism (yes, of course terrorism), but i mean, to pain.

The nagging, unpredictable lower right leg pain.

It flares up sometimes just walking.

On April Fool’s Day 2009, jeff noel began writing five daily, differently-themed blogs (on five different sites). It was to be a 100-day self-imposed “writer’s bootcamp”, in preparation for writing his first book. He hasn’t missed a single day since.

Risk taking 101

Moonset near Disney World
Lower center, just above tree line – the moon is setting as i leave for the gym.

Cycling 25 miles round trip just to go to the gym was a one-time solution to skip a day of running to rest a sore leg.

That was two weeks ago.

Now i’m 96% convinced that i will take an indefinite break from running.

Could be a month.

Might be six months.

Time will tell.

Feeling exceptionally creative (choosing to bike is just a simple, but dramatic departure from normal) because underneath the physical focus is a work initiative that’s going to blow the roof off what i’ve done in the past.

And breaking free (intentionally or unintentionally) from normal is very inspiring.

Stay healthy, have fun

Map My Run screen shot
Yesterday’s slow run included two splits that were virtually pain free,

An 8:16 mile four and a 6:51 mile six are quite ordinary when held against the past year’s running. But with the recent resurfacing of right calf pain, these times become something to really feel good about. Find a million ways to stay motivated.
