Fewer, harder workouts

Sean D'Souza keynote slide
Sean D’Souza (tiny left corner) slide from two days ago.

Sean D’Souza was a day two afternoon speaker. He’s from New Zealand. Among other things, he and his wife work three months, then take one month off. This means three months vacation per year. Wow.

He claims it’s true.

His third and final bullet point (above) is “fewer, kinder clients”. Everyone’s dream (in addition to the whole vacation proposition) right?

What is the paradox of fewer and nicer? And does it matter?

Yes.

And here’s the paradox…

Since retiring, immediately began a different running and gym schedule.

Moving from a monthly goal:

  • 20 running days
  • 8 gym visits

To a monthly goal:

  • 12 runs (far fewer)
  • 12 gym visits

Fewer, longer runs.

Everyone’s dream?

Intentionally use your expert knowledge to your advantage

Map My Run screen shot jeff noel
Yesterday, April 18, 2015.

Yesterday’s 90-minute run became a 90-minute walk instead.

Was comfortable making the change without guilt for three solid reasons:.

  1. Tired from being up late from the Jimmy Buffett concert
  2. The subtropical heat from starting the activity later than normal
  3. The quality of the previous three outings, including a great 5k race and a six-minute time trial.

Know thyself.

And intentionally use that expert knowledge to your advantage.

Are we obligated to be aging wellness advocates?

Baby Boomer wellness speakers
The Magic of wellness grows from intentional efforts.

It’s challenging to comprehend how in exercising fewer days, more exercise is actually accomplished. Since retiring four months ago, have unintentionally fallen into a three days a week routine. This nets four “rest days” every week.

As aging wellness advocates, we need to rethink everything we think is correct and experiment with and seek breakthroughs.

Better wellness equals better attitude.

Doing things faster and better is not the solution

Be first in your category or be the category. Boldness does have genius.

What does this mean for wellness? It means you’re in charge. It’s your responsibility to find creative solutions to impossible obstacles.

No guts, no glory.

It may mean taking a demotion at work. It may mean eliminating certain pleasurable habits that (only temporarily) relieve stress. It certainly means that change is the only solution.

What happens when you convince creativity that you care?

Focus and discipline will reward you when you least expect it.

Creativity knows you care, and rewards you, when you embrace it like a trusted friend.

Yesterday’s run was cut short because of time. A five mile run became meaningful and motivating when it was approached differently than in the past.

What if i could run it in less than 40 minutes? This would require a level of focus and effort rarely accomplished outside of an organized race. Bottomline it was motivating enough to accomplish something cool… 38:36.

After the first warmup mile, the last four miles averaged 7:24. Never saw that coming.
