This is significant because it’s how the Magic works

All those challenges and obstacles that get in our way – no one is immune from them.

No.

One.

Still nursing a tight right calf. No clue what caused it. No clue what it is. Taking it slow and using pain to guide the comeback.

Yesterday’s 10-miler was alternating a one-mile walk with a two-mile slow jog, then repeating three times.

Had a good gym (core, strength, stretch) workout too.

Note photo: The 1500 began moments after the photo was taken. When the gun went off everyone had 100 meters before we hit the first turn.

Oddly, i felt a cramp-like pain in my right calf about 50 meters into the race. It came and went for the first lap (90 seconds) and then intensified at the beginning of the second lap.

Bowed out after the first lap.

A perfect metaphor for real life

Sidewalk near Walt Disney World
Yesterday at ‘the track’, just walking.

Drum roll please.

Soreness is ______…

Still sore, but less so.

Yesterday’s (six mile) walk was a decent compromise.

Life is not fair.

But to be fair, at least it’s unfair to everyone, no exceptions.

Why did this happen?

Track close up shot
Came here to run this. Attempted to use the 1500 as a warmup.

Charlotte High School Track
Brutally hot… only three spectators in the bleachers.

Why did this happen?

After what seemed like a perfectly (finally) timed six mile warmup in preparation for the 800 meters, come to find out, the printed schedule i had was completely wrong. The 800 would be at the end of the day, not the beginning. Major challenge.

It was either go get in the car and drive back to Orlando, or see if i could get into the 1500 which was about an hour away. i got into the 1500 and waited, and rationalize that the 1500 is a substantially slower pace and i would be warmed up enough to just have fun with it.

Bottomline, too much time between warmup and race.

Couldn’t have gone out any more conservatively on the first lap.

Right calf pain, kinda like a cramp.

So after the first lap, dropped out.

Was it sodium or potassium deficiency?

Is it a muscle pull?

Time will tell.

It’s sore this morning.

Was hoping it wouldn’t be.

Progress and wisdom are a dynamic duo

Mile split by jeff noel masters track
Hand-timed while running in the meet.

Half-mile split by jeff noel masters track
Carried an iPhone/stopwatch in both races.

Saturday’s track meet had several firsts, including one that is significant:

No soreness and no pain from overdoing it.

Not that evening. Not yesterday. Not now.

This is huge.

Progress.

Wisdom.

PS. For a 56 year old to run a single event with a time like that could create some stiffness. To do both on the same day, almost guaranteed soreness.

Pain is near the lower left asterisk.

Was it a mistake to run a half marathon three days ago? If the mantra is:

Stay healthy. Have Fun.

At what point do we recognize that we may be pushing ourselves too hard or too far?

Slight pain in lower inside right knee. First time for a pain like this. So yes, there is a delicate balance between the just enough and too much. Mistakes help define this line.
