St Mary, day 1, body

East Glacier Highway view
Looking at St Mary Valley while driving from Swiftcurrent Valley.

Getting to know Sally (Black) Welder and her husband Terry was extraordinary good luck.

Sally is Hugh and Margaret Black’s daughter.

Hugh and Margaret Black are the ‘origin story’ for St Mary’s commercial existence well before Going-to-the-Sun Road was completed in 1932.

Our St Mary Lodge “West Motel” room is a stone’s throw from where Sally grew up as a child, teen, and eventually marrying Terry after he returned from the Vietnam War and got a Summer job in Glacier National Park.

Swiftcurrent Valley, day 7, body

chocolate chip chip cookies for the oven
We will not get chocolate chip cookies from our oven this month. Doesn’t matter. We will get plenty of other mountainy goodness. Guaranteed.

Swiftcurrent Motor Inn’s location ‘feels like’ chocolate chip cookies baking in our home’s kitchen.

Swiftcurrent Valley’s trails ‘feel like’ chocolate chip cookies baking in our home’s kitchen.

And then there’s eating that first almost too hot to eat chocolate chip cookie.

Thank you Swiftcurrent Motor Inn.

Mt Wilbur at sunrise.. Photo from Many Glacier Hotel.

We come here to hike.

Hiking is a fancy word for walking.

We go to bed every night knowing we did what we set out to do.

Thank you Swiftcurrent Valley.

Swiftcurrent Valley, day 5, body

3-d map of Glacier National Parl
Bottom-center is Mickey Mouse figurine and the tiny ‘town’ of Babb. Straight up from Mickey goes the 13-mile road to Grinnell Point. This is a cool photo of the St Mary visitor’s center lobby map.

In the map photo above, easy to see how Grinnell Point divides two valleys.

Personally, the experienced Glacier-hiker in me finds this map photo humbling and inspiring.
