A 5:53 mile ain’t bad at this stage in the comeback

iPhone stopwatch mile split
Real life in real time… in-the-moment moments happen constantly

What if we had a great reputation with ourselves?

You know, that first thing we think of when we think of ourselves.

For example, our ability to do what we say we’re gonna do.

But our dreams are crazy. Tiring. Mundane even.

This is a long hard journey.

Too long.

Too hard.

So…

A sub-six minute mile does not fall from the sky.

Wanted a sub-six. Delivered a sub-six.

Do what we say we’re gonna do.

No?

Yesterday, such a trivial photo on such a trivial morning…

Note: The remaining four posts today will be the ones originally written 100 days ago. And of course the posts written yesterday, today, and the days to come will involve Cooper and this experience.

iPhone stopwatch for runners
Yesterday, such a trivial photo on such a trivial morning…

LSD for 53 minutes yesterday, knowing two things:

  1. Leaving tomorrow for a five-day Winnipeg trip.
  2. The day after returning is the annual tradition of the very first 5k ever.

This morning, a mile time trial to run sub six without keeling over. This will be a small sign of decent (but not excellent) readiness.

What if we went over by three seconds?

Snow White at Epcot
We are being watched all the time, even when running (quickly)

What if we went over by three seconds?

If we tried to do something in six minutes or less and didn’t, would we be disappointed?

So yeah, let’s take a 6:03 mile as not meeting the goal but close enough.

Why?

Because coming back from injury, off-season, or any other reason, is a process that can not be rushed.

Is this absolutely true, or only true when we feel like believing it

Lethbridge Lodge Hotel and Conference Center
Tropical in the atrium – reminds one of Orlando (home). Outside, freezing.

Is this absolutely true, or only true when we feel like believing it (which may be never if we don’t get off the treadmill of life)?

We should always have some compelling health goal in front of us.

And occasionally, one that is seriously compelling.

So ten weeks into 2014 – five of them on the road for four to six days at a time- finally able to run on the road.

The only two days in 2014 that have been warm enough to run were the past two.

Insight: Tell the notion of quitting to take a hike.

What stokes our fire to carry on in spite of the constant cries

Lahti, Finland's three Ski Jumps Stadium
The simple, exquisite daisy at the next blog came from this hillside

What stokes our fire to carry on in spite of the constant cries that it’s too difficult to stay motivated and too mundane to have fun with exercise?

A compelling (and hopefully fun) goal.

So yeah, let’s try another comeback.

Last year’s comeback was stalled by double hernia (hernia occurred June 7) repair surgury in July.

Two days ago moved up to a new age group… M55-59.

Being the youngest is a competitive advantage.
