Grateful for the pain

Disney Keynote Speaker
i love being an entrepreneur. A crazy misfit. An outlier. A dreamer. And so on. Grateful for all the struggles. It means i’m moving forward on a big dream.

No pain jogging yesterday.

It’s insane how long i’ve lived with nagging foot pain.

Grateful for the pain though.

There are others who have no feet and they would give anything to have sore feet.

No pain, go gain

Disney Institute Keynote Speaker
At Disney, or anywhere greatness is abundant.

No pain, go gain.

The 30-day break from running has morphed into 2-3 years. i never wrote the date down because it wasn’t supposed to be a significant gap.

Continuous foot pain. At any moment. For any reason. Its cause never uncovered. So all i could do was move on.

The biking and walking to the gym have been my cardio supplements without running.

And then we returned from a family trip to Glacier National Park.

We began running one-mailbox-a-day a few days later on August 6, 2018. This is a significant date because all three of us began together – with a dream of lifetime fitness.

Our run this morning was about 1.25 miles at a slow pace. But we are out the door long before the sun is up. That is a miracle, a blessing.

For weeks now, i haven’t detected a hint of pain.

Can we age without getting old?

Fall hiking in Glacier
Hiking Highline Trail next to Haystack Butte, back in September. Age should not have us wondering if we can or cannot hike through mountain trails.

Yesterday’s workout was a great reminder of how being relatively pain-free is one of our bests gifts to ourselves.

i’m “nursing” a shoulder pain that came out of nowhere. It’s likely brought on from repetitive overuse, or from some of the new exercises i’m doing.

As we age and lead less active lifestyles, our muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, cardiovascular system, skin, tissue and so on becomes worn with use and disuse.

You must pick your pain

tough runner's planks
Revisiting this photo from a couple days ago. Why? Planks can be difficult. Not having good core strength is difficult too. Pick one.

You must pick your pain.

Text conversation with a former Disney Institute colleague.

Recommended my Podiatrist to him.

He’s visited Dr. Curtis Wagner.

Making progress.

Mark asked me yesterday, “How long did it take for the pain to go away?”

“Two years, or more.”

Then i said, “Get the night boots and the custom orthotic inserts.”

He has trouble sleeping with the boots.

Who doesn’t?

Totally unnatural to wear boots to bed, night after night, year after year.

Hey, i get it.

Been there done that.

Is the hassle (pain) of night boots worse than the pain (hassle) of every step of your waking life?

My two last resorts for a solution

Jewish wisdom
Yes. Not depending on a miracle, even though a miracle would be nice.

Progress: the muscle knots on my right calf are softening.

This has been accomplished using a hard tennis-like ball – the kind at the pet store that are not easily destroyed by dogs chewing them apart.

In two hours, Rick at Massage Envy and i will spend 90 minutes together.

Massage and acupuncture are the two last resorts for a solution to return to running.

Starting with massage first. This will be the second one.
