Can you answer this simple question?

healthy eating
Eat like you mean it. Yesterday’s lunch: two avocados, two tangerines, one tomato, and a small piece of cheese. Washed it down with a glass of milk and had an apple for dessert. Why? i desire superior (to my former self) health metrics.

Can you answer this simple question?

Why am i doing all this hard work?

If you can’t convince yourself, your goal isn’t clear enough, concise enough, and most definitely, not compelling enough.

Each day Disney’s goal is the same

Disney wellness speaker
Each day Disney’s goal is the same. Disney wants the entire 40+ square mile property to be spotless.

If we thought like Disney – daily world-class excellence – what would change in our daily health habits?

What is the primary goal of exercise?

Running app
Yesterday was a run, today is rest day.

Contrary to popular thinking (driven by the media), losing weight is not the primary goal from exercise.

Exercise’s primary goal is strength, endurance and range of motion.

Extra weight is unhealthy. At least it is for me.

Have trouble accepting this?

Fill a small backpack with 50 pounds of stuff and wear it 24/7 for one week. yes, wear it to bed, in the shower, even while exercising.

Tough, right?

Well, that’s happens over time. Gaining 50 pounds doesn’t happen overnight. Odds are decent that gaining another 50 pounds could happen in your next 10-20 years.

So imagine wearing a 100-pound backpack.

Excess weight is unhealthy. The primary goal for exercise is physical wellness. Secondarily, it can add joy, camaraderie, and confidence to your karma.

On April Fool’s Day 2009, jeff noel began writing five daily, differently-themed blogs (on five different sites). It was to be a 100-day self-imposed “writer’s bootcamp”, in preparation for writing his first book. He hasn’t missed a single day since.

Life without a clear, concise, compelling goal

Shot putter's dirty t-shirt
Why is one side dirty while the other isn’t? Because he was practicing the Shot Put.

Every teen (even us back in the day) has the opportunity to discover small seeds of possibility within themselves…

He didn’t want to miss Track & Field practice yesterday, a Saturday.

It was only his third practice with the team that has been practicing for two months already.

This is a first on so many levels.

  • He’s never done sports
  • Never expressed interest in sports
  • Never felt confident enough to consider sports

He (independently) coordinated and followed up (and followed through) with Coach Williams.

And i have this vision that in the future he will recall this experience and it will give him what he needs to overcome fear, uncertainty, and doubt.

A metaphor for our own lives, no?

Yesterday was the first day of High School second semester, which included our son’s first real, personal fitness class. He has historically been non-athletic. The teacher had everyone do two laps (half mile). i had no idea this was coming.

Coincidently, the day before, our father/son run included eight mailboxes, or 800 meters. We started running eight weeks ago.

i remember telling him after we finished the half-mile jog that we ran the equivalent of two laps around a track. Have to believe that he had a confidence with him that would have not existed had we not started running 100 meters a day for a week, and then adding 100 meters more each week.

The slow and steady, almost ridiculously easy distance, and the gradual increase added up, and will continue to add up.

A metaphor for our own lives, no?
