Health Metrics

One of the best ways to know how things are going is to keep track. That almost sounds like a Yogi Berra-ism. But it isn’t. It’s the way I think. And the way we all ought to think about our health metrics.

Some health indicators are harder to come by, like cholesterol and triglyceride screenings. But blood pressure, that’s easy. Many stores (with pharmacies) have free machines. You can check (and double check) in about two minutes. The photo is from our grocery store trip last night.

Why wouldn’t you?

While We’re On The Subject

Yesterday’s post included photos from Disney’s Epcot Theme Park in Orlando, Florida – my home for the past 27 years. When we moved to Orlando, from Washington State, I told Cheryl the goal was to live within five minutes of Disney World.

Our first apartment – 18 miles away.

Our first home – 30 miles away.

Current residence – one mile away.

Guess where we work?

What does this post have to do with health and wellness? Everything. Balance and doing what you love.

This Conversation Opened My Eyes

Prescription Anti-Inflammatory
Prescription Anti-Inflammatory

Foot problems are more common than most people think. Once you have chronic foot problems, you talk and listen differently than before, and develop bonds with other foot-pain sufferers.

So I asked him a few questions:

1. Did you get a cortisone shot? Yes.

2. Do you wear custom orthotics? No.

3. Do you take an anti-inflammatory pill? No.

4. Do you apply topical anti-inflammatory cream or gel 4x/day? No.

5. Do you ice your foot twice a day? No.

6. Do you wear night resting-foot splints? No.

7. Do you stretch everyday? No.

8. Do you do strengthening exercises? No.

It was never my intent to look like a show off, but it sure does, doesn’t it?

About 2,500 Runners & Walkers

Do you keep track of your progress? I mean, with a few things that are really important to you.

Your checkbook maybe. Or your vacation savings. Or your weight loss or weight gain. Or your running distance or running times?

I love running.

And sometimes I don’t.

Like yesterday at the Central Florida 5k (sponsored by Track Shack) Watermelon Run, I wanted to stop a few times.

You know, quit.

But I didn’t.

Hope you find whatever it is you need to not quit.

Quitting is for amateurs.

Become a pro at not quitting.

And be prepared to bleed to make it a reality.

The Art Of Pace

Fellow Runner From India

In running, most sports, and life, pace is a crucial factor.

Real life. There’s a runner I know that recently ran two 5k’s. He preaches pace, trains pace, delivers pace. He says pace is key.

His goal was to run the first two miles at exactly 7:00 each, and then gradually run faster the third mile, aiming for sub-22:00

First 5k mile splits:

  1. 7:00 (perfect)
  2. 7:00 (perfect)
  3. 6:40 (nice)
  4. :40
  5. 21:20 result

His other 5k was the same plan, first two miles at seven-minutes each, final mile gradually faster.

  1. 6:40 (way too fast – the adrenaline of 12,000+ runners)
  2. 6:55 (back on track – almost perfect)
  3. 6:25 (wow)
  4. :35
  5. 20:35 result

Few things more rewarding than practicing what you preach.
