Tied for longest continuous run

Sanibel Island thunderstorm
We see what we want to see.

Yesterday morning’s run was 1.5 miles.

By my standards, barely worth it.

By my running partner’s standards, it tied for his longest continuous run ever.

The long way is the short cut.

We see what we want to see.

Insignificance or significance.

Every choice has the same opportunity, even the ones that are routine.

Why?

Because our routine defines us.

Changing it is literally impossible.

Only an indomitable will to change will bring about change.

Anything less will allow excuses to grow and fester, and eventually win.

When our excuses win, we lose.

Stay healthy, have fun

Yesterday’s slow run included two splits that were virtually pain free,

An 8:16 mile four and a 6:51 mile six are quite ordinary when held against the past year’s running. But with the recent resurfacing of right calf pain, these times become something to really feel good about. Find a million ways to stay motivated.

Good workout yesterday and he was slow

Disney Leadership expert speaker
There is a steady and willing crowd at the feet of the master…Disney.

A 25-mile roundtrip bike ride, plus an intentionally short (and easy) 30-minute gym workout at the bike midway point. Slept 7.5 hours again.

But that’s not the good news…

Our Son’s high school personal fitness class of 13 students all ran two laps (800 meters). i’ve been encouraging him to run slower on the first lap and faster on the second.

He finally tried it.

And here’s what he discovered for the first time:

  • What it’s like to pass someone who is slowing down because you are speeding up.
  • He had never passed anyone before.
  • He had never finished ahead of others before.

This is a big deal.

A metaphor for our own lives, no?

Yesterday was the first day of High School second semester, which included our son’s first real, personal fitness class. He has historically been non-athletic. The teacher had everyone do two laps (half mile). i had no idea this was coming.

Coincidently, the day before, our father/son run included eight mailboxes, or 800 meters. We started running eight weeks ago.

i remember telling him after we finished the half-mile jog that we ran the equivalent of two laps around a track. Have to believe that he had a confidence with him that would have not existed had we not started running 100 meters a day for a week, and then adding 100 meters more each week.

The slow and steady, almost ridiculously easy distance, and the gradual increase added up, and will continue to add up.

A metaphor for our own lives, no?

Determination is always the underdog

Determination is always the underdog.

Dear Son, congratulations on competing your first 800-meter run last night.

Slow and steady works when we continue going slow and steady. As soon as we stop, slow and steady no longer works.

Some things in life are ridiculously obvious.
