The surreality of the gym

Cross Country trophy
Cross Country is a real sport.

The surreality of the gym last night blindsided me. It was you’re first team practice in the weight room. Dude, last night was a big deal. Congratulations.

On April Fool’s Day 2009, jeff noel began writing five daily, differently-themed blogs (on five different sites). It was to be a 100-day self-imposed “writer’s bootcamp”, in preparation for writing his first book. He hasn’t missed a single day since.

He’s starting, begrudgingly, to see the light

He (the high school freshman) said it was the first time he felt stronger. He is taking personal fitness as a required course. It was an important revelation for him.

We started running yesterday, pretty scary

Walking
Yesterday, Halloween, my son and i began jogging. We went from our mailbox to our neighbor’s mailbox.

At 15, and as a High School freshman, our son is seeing things that didn’t concern him before. It’s generally considered a rite of passage that teens start seeing a bigger picture as they mature.

Roughly 75% of his High School participate in sports.

Athletics are a great way to get involved. And a great way to learn how to start taking care of the temple that houses everything keeping us alive.

Our pace was (intentionally) slower than walking, by the way.

The older we get, the more difficult it is to break a boundary or limit

The older we get, the more difficult it is to break a boundary or limit. Why? Because we’ve been there, done that.

We’ve tested our limits and we think we know them well.

Remember when we were 13?

Nearly every new thing was an opportunity to push our limits.

Riding 12.6 miles round trip was pathetic compared to the 170-mile Cross Florida Ride (completed in ’85 and again in ’86) done in one day.

But for a 13-year old, it was his biggest athletic moment.

It was cool to witness.

Be well today.
