Day 60

dark image with the word Day 60

Two months after my first day at Disney we hit Spring Break and Easter.

Everyone works 14 days straight. Don’t even think about asking for vacation.

We could set a single day attendance record in the history of the Walt Disney Company.

Even with everyone working 14 days straight, we still had open shifts.

So when i did a double shift, i’d get off at midnight, get a few hours of sleep and be driving a boat by 8am — until midnight. What’s that, like 16 continuous hours?

Arriving just before 4pm, my Jungle Cruise supervisor was on the dock to greet me at my shift’s start.

He said something that was the first, and most powerful, lesson on setting leadership expectations.

Goal.

What’s the supreme goal of every customer service interaction?

Pair, then share.

Show you vs tell you.

Cup of ice.

Three dinners – satisfaction is dangerous.

Care like Michelangelo painted

January 25, 1982. First day of Disney Traditions. It was a Monday.

*Care – for your physical wellbeing – like Michelangelo painted.

January 25, 1982…the 3-day Disney Traditions class at Disney University.

About 70 days later, all hands on deck for the two-week Easter (April 11th that year) peak-attendance season.

It was 14 days straight and sometimes double shifts.

What the front-line Jungle Cruise leader told me was my first big leadership lesson at Walt Disney World.
