We began jogging two mailboxes a day this week

College recruitment poster at high school
Yesterday, at High School – college recruiting is a big deal there.

We began jogging two mailboxes a day this week, our third week now since starting this journey on Halloween. The first two weeks were one mailbox a day.

Reminded the High School freshman that we will look back on these early days and be thankful and mindful that “slow and steady” is an unbeatable strategy – as long as we stay with it.

You can’t improve what you don’t measure

Miles vs kilometers.

Miles vs kilometers. Heading to Canada in five days.

You can’t improve what you don’t measure.

And you can’t improve what you don’t do.

Distance is only one way to track progress.

Other ways:

Time

Weight

BMI

Resting heart rate

Cholesterol

Flexibility

Core strength

Commitment

Passion

Joy

i always say, “Find a million ways to stay motivated.”

Too hot for a shirt

Map My Run screen shot
Yesterday’s sub-tropical run began at 6:25am, in November.

One of my secrets for staying motivated is finding creative things to get a kick out of. One of those things is the ability, honed from the past 16 years of running, to walk onto the back porch first thing each morning (while the first cup of hot water boils in the microwave) and to be able to sense the change of one or two degrees.

Yesterday, November 2, it was six degrees warmer than the rest of the week.

Too hot for a shirt.

Been wearing a shirt for the past month due to the cooler Fall weather. It was fun to do something i didn’t see coming.

Insight: Doesn’t matter how small the “thing’ is, if it works for you, take it.

We started running yesterday, pretty scary

Walking
Yesterday, Halloween, my son and i began jogging. We went from our mailbox to our neighbor’s mailbox.

At 15, and as a High School freshman, our son is seeing things that didn’t concern him before. It’s generally considered a rite of passage that teens start seeing a bigger picture as they mature.

Roughly 75% of his High School participate in sports.

Athletics are a great way to get involved. And a great way to learn how to start taking care of the temple that houses everything keeping us alive.

Our pace was (intentionally) slower than walking, by the way.

Will we find a comfortable pace?

Driving down to Disney’s Riverside Resort to meet Ohio State friend, Craig, for a 6am run.

He’s been running regularly for about a year. Me, about 16 years. There’s a 21 year difference in age. Hope neither of these two things means anything.
