In the heat and slowness, gratitude

Yesterday’s easy 8-miler.

 

Working to get out the door earlier. Back to like it used to be, running mostly in the dark.

Why?

August has been so humid.

The time of day can make a world of difference in how much we enjoy running.

Still nursing a mystery pain, so the first and last miles are walks. The six miles in between are two to three minutes off normal healthy pace.

Enjoying the easy effort.

Ahhh, the good old days of running in the dark.

Djuan has an 8am steering committee meeting every Wednesday. Wednesday’s are my easy days.

We synched our calendars so we could both enjoy a leisurely run together.

It’s a 5k from my mailbox to Djuan’s.

Turned out to be 11 miles of LSD (long, slow, distance).

Have a rare running partner this morning

In a way, this morning’s run is Cast only.

 

Heading across the street to Keene’s Point to run this morning with 25-year friend Djuan Rivers. We met as colleagues for Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club opening team in 1990.

Djuan recently completed a marathon in Antarctica. He’s also parachuted over Mt Everest too. He has an extensive list of extreme adventures.

He has been insanely successful at Disney.

He told her he is feeling strong

His very first 5k was this one, in 2005, finishing in 22:10.

 

Last night, poolside, darkness setting in. He told her he is feeling strong for tomorrow’s race.

His feet haven’t felt this good since 2006.

His measurable goal is to run faster than his very first 5k, on the same course he runs tomorrow. He was 46 when he ran his first 5k in 22:10.

He thinks he can run faster than that without killing himself, even though he’s a decade older.

He’s been running since 1999 and has found a million ways to stay motivated.

One mile time trial was actually 6:02.

 

Running began April 1999 after a wake up call – a bad cholesterol blood work report. The good HDL cholesterol was in the danger zone. Doctor said exercise would fix it.

To gauge progress and challenge myself, about once a month a one mile time trial is run. Yesterday’s aim was to break six minutes flat. Missed it by two seconds.
