Dear younger me

Father and son
Yesterday, leaving school after Cross Country practice. He’s 16, i’m 57. He’s the master of the poker face.

Dear younger me,

You will be tempted by the devil to put off getting into good and decent physical condition. You will over come this, eventually, but it will take decades. In fact, you won’t become fully committed until you turn 40.

The devil will get pissed and then go all out to tempt you to believe you’re good to go. Meaning, now that you’re in decent shape, you can start to miss a few days here and there. Don’t fall for it. Too many missed days become an insidious habit that eventually sends you to the place you were before you started.

PS. By staying committed for a lifetime, you will be able to help your unborn child between his 15th and 16th birthdays to start his physical wellness journey by running with him – you will be 56 when this commences.

Dear Yesterday

Highland Trail sign
From Granite Park Chalet, it’s another four miles down – a 2,000-foot elevation drop.

Highland Trail spur to Grinnell Glacier overlook
The .6-mile spur (left trail) gained serious elevation in our 14-mile hike. We were on the trail for 10.5 hours. Trail on the right is where we had come from.

Dear Yesterday,

While Tomorrow always holds bright hope for walking the talk, it also holds false hope and seemingly impossible temptations to overcome. You, Yesterday, actually tell me the truth. There’s never any sugar-coating from you about how much exercise i did, how much rest i got, and how balanced my nutrition was 24 hours ago.

Ps. i quietly vote for you to be the 2020 Olympic wellness coach in Tokyo.

Dear Tomorrow

Grinnell Lake
Only one way to get to this spot. Yes, you could ride a horse. Do you travel with a horse?

Apple watch exercise app
We hiked over 8 miles before lunch.

Dear Tomorrow,

Please let me lean on you for the hope and joy of improving myself yet again.

Ps. Please don’t let me use you as an excuse to make poor wellness choices today.

From a mistake, an amazing opportunity

Live like you mean it
Known each other since 1977, freshman year at West Chester State College (now WCU). Glacier National Park, Summer 2016 (Lake Josephine).

From a mistake, an amazing opportunity; will get to that in a minute.

Booked last week’s trip to Glacier National Park as a last resort for a Summer trip because it was the only available reservation out of all the Glacier National Park Lodges – apparently, booking four months in advance isn’t even close to being enough. In a panic, i took the last week of August (the only thing available for the entire Summer).

i knew it would be a bad idea to take our son out of school for a week on the third week of the new school year.

Desperate, i booked the only option.

Each week i went back to the Glacier National Park reservations site and a month later, a miracle – an opening for an entire week at Rising Sun the first week of August (and no school conflict)..

Kept the August reservations – there were two. Four nights at Rising Sun, two nights at Apgar.

Later, a college buddy accepted the invite to travel that final August week.
