His nose did not grow so maybe he was honest

iPhone 5S brown case
Real life in real time (today’s post and the post in this photo)

Our air conditioner stopped working and upstairs was sweltering. Grabbed a tank top heading out the door (also sweltering) to pick up our Son at school.

He asked if we could go to a store near the Mall (same Mall with an Apple Store). We spontaneously ate dinner at the Mall food court and I suggested we pop into the Apple Store.

Totally unplanned, bought a new iPhone case.

The Apple Store employee said to the 54-year old, “I wanna look that good when I’m your age”.

Unsolicited.

Approaching 15 years of focused and disciplined effort.

When you hear the long way is the short cut, it ain’t a theory.

There is an emotional labor to the big things in our life

Book back cover design instructions
It took two days and serious thought to write something so brief

There is an emotional labor to the big things in our life. And it makes us physically tired. And we need to figure this out. Otherwise we will quit.

The pressure of a book deadline. The reality of having a teenager. Travel. Potential, looming war in Syria. Aging parents. Tragedy amongst friends.

Walked 50 minutes yesterday instead of running 30 minutes. Just did not feel like running (nor walking really). But I walked anyway. It was a decent compromise and I’ll take it.

How often is our energy spread thin?

Disney compass
We are pulled in all different directions

Our energy is spread thin more often than not. It is what it is. Long ago our energy was used to hunt, gather, build, repair – basic survival before civilized society. We did not need to exercise long ago because simply surviving the day was more than enough exercise.

Now we have first world challenges. But without exercise first world predators no one talks about are always lurking. Busy schedules. Competing priorities. Exhaustion. Excuses. Apathy.

Here’s a wellness motivation tip we’ve never heard before

The book Assholes, in airport bookstand
Give ourselves a break please, or this could be the title of our autobiography, no?

Here’s a wellness motivation tip we’ve never heard before.

We are the only one who’s experienced every failure we’ve ever had.

Same with all our successes. And there have been many, if we subtract out the let-downs.

Focus on our shining moments. Live there. Bask there.

Move forward in that vehicle.

Go.

Today.

We lose our edge to stay motivated without these three things

Indianapolis, Indiana
view from treadmill

How’s our motivation? What would we say to that right now?

We lose our edge to stay motivated without these three things:

  1. an impossible goal
  2. (ongoing) compelling short term goals to reach the first goal
  3. the creativity to turn a negative into a positive

Back last night from a road trip. One of the most taxing weeks in a long time. Exercise was minimal.

Five days in a hotel netted only two treadmill runs (not a treadmill fan):

  • 2-miles at 10-minute mile pace (pedestrian for me)
  • 4-miles, including a 6-minute mile (sweet!)

Does this example mean anything to us?
