Always carry bear spray

We hiked eight miles from Logan Pass to here (lower right).
We hiked five more miles (13 total) to get here.

We carry bear spray everywhere.

Why?

When you are 13 miles from the nearest road in the middle of Grizzly Bear country, you can hike alone, but you should never, ever hike without Bear Spray.

Why?

It deters bears, 50 times stronger than mace.

The early worm hates the bird

Granite Park Chalet basking in the sun as we climbed to Grinnell Glacier overlook.
Some context. Granite Park Chalet is lower middle.
Boiling water, freeze-dried meal, and a spoon is all that’s needed for a hearty breakfast.

The early worm hates the bird.

Why?

Because early birds get better results.

The early bird is done before most wake up.

Early birds get their most important exercise done plus eat a great breakfast, and, generally, tackle essential work tasks first.

Not only did we feed our soul at the overlook but we also got incredible exercise.

Easy 10 miles yesterday

The fog and cold quickly became clear and warm.

Easy 10 miles yesterday.

Almost 8 miles to Granite Park Chalet. Two water runs at 1/2 mile round trip each plus other mile wandering around.

We reminded each other that we were “commuting” to work.

Insanely surreal.

Luck is preparation meeting opportunity.

Not enough hours in the day?

Hit the trail around 8:30AM. Destination is Oberlin summit.

Not enough hours in the day?

This is a long-term challenge only you can solve.

Habits, rituals, structure, processes, priorities.

Keep it simple.

Focus on the basics.

Here’s an underutilized motivational success factor: envision your future life thriving with enough time each day. Envision your life without a solution, as well as your challenges compounding over time.

Hoped for versus actual

Airport candy shop sign.
It was a fun moment.

What i hoped to do yesterday and what actually happened fell apart as the day progressed.

Hoped to stop at Smiths grocery and get some healthy choices, then stop at Cabin 20 to pick up the supplies (and bear spray) i stored there three weeks ago. Drive 40 minutes up to Logan Pass, park, and hike Mt. Oberlin. Finally, drive 20 minutes down to Rising Sun, check in and have the Mountain Man dinner.

Things were going according to plan until Logan Pass. The wind chill, but mostly the late time of day, had me cancel hiking.

Dinner in the restaurant morphed to boiling water for a freeze-dried chicken gumbo meal. The gumbo was not good.

Back on track, closed the day with a bullseye 9:00 PM bedtime.

Sleep trumped exercise yesterday.

This sets up today rather nicely.
