Do what you get to do

Hiking Trail sign and two small Disney toys from Pixar Soul
This two night excursion is to prepare for the upcoming three night trip with Cheryl.

One small (child size) day pack. Did “gym” workout last evening at West Glacier RV Park. Better Wi-Fi there than my Motel room 400 meters away. Took two hours to upload 350 photos and videos from 30 hours at Granite Park Chalet. A parked rental car next to the RV Park front office becomes “upload central”. RV Park becomes the “gym”. Use what’s around you.

In case you missed the physical BFO

Apple Watch fitness tracker image
Still getting my sea-level lungs and legs acclimated. Have done this exact hike in 85 minutes. At 114 minutes (pictured here), that’s a 29-minute gap.
Two trips in a row this Summer where i arrived the same morning the supply train arrives. Cool.

Congratulations for making your vibrant physical health a non-negotiable.

Grow physically

Freeze dried meals on display rack
Variety and flavors have improved dramatically. Freeze-dried meals are a staple.

At 60-something, why hike four-uphill miles with 2,400’ elevation gain, in near freezing sunrise temps?

Growth mindset.

Guilt for moving

IPhone screen shot of zoom login screen
Did two calls yesterday in the cold, before descending. One was a zoom call. Work from anywhere, even 6,600’ up in the mountains with no wifi, no running water, no electricity, and a pit-toilet.

Dear Son, sometimes you will feel guilty for being physically vibrant. Be physically vibrant anyway.

Use great rules

Two men hiking in mountains
Off to Ahern Peak. Logan is leading, then Spencer, then me.
Two men hiking in mountains
This cirque (large bowl) is massive. How massive? In person, it will take your breath away.
Shovel and pike on mountain trail
Two sets of shovel and pick. One for each of the trail crew. The trail crews make hiking in the wild possible. Their work is invisible to the average person.

Hiking Trail etiquette says ascending hiker has right away.

On level trail there is no rule.

However, i offer whoever has the most people in a group has right of way.

And, when two groups are the same size, you can always be the one to initiate yielding.

Finally, if two hikers (or hiker groups) are traveling in same direction, the slower hiker(s) should yield.

Common sense, not common.
