23 Oberlin

50-second video:

This Summer, summited 8,200’ Oberlin five times the first week i arrived in July. First trip up was 100 minutes.

Previous best time, without trying to make it feel like a race – just moving at a strong, steady clip – is 58 minutes, in 2020 (last year).

Yesterday’s 50-minute ascent destroyed what i thought was the limit, 58 mins.

Nope.

Maybe after 22 previous ascents, time spent way-finding is close to zero.

Obsessed?

Glacier.

Already ready to go?

Yes and no.

Yes for family. No for hiking.

Reynolds Catwalk

If you could hike 10 miles in Glacier National Park near the Continental Divide, would you do it? Could you do it?

And if the elevation averaged 7,000’, still doable?

And if the wind was constantly blowing at either side of 30+ mph?

My answers: yes, yes, yes, and yes.

Yesterday’s 10-miler behind Mt Reynolds, in the hard-blowing cold, high-elevation wind was extraordinary.

Live like you mean it!

Don’t be scary

Being nice to others is an irrefutably beneficial concept.

Yes, sometimes a profoundly simple insight is painfully obvious to call out.

And it’s ridiculous when someone moans/groans, “Yeeesssss, I knooowwwww. Be nice to people. Give me a break, okay?”

Deep breath.

Exhale.

Same thing needs to be applied to yourself.

Be nice to the temple housing everything keeping you alive.

Go the extra inch

Disney Customer Service speaker surprise on a mountain
Three small stones and a pin. Easy to carry. Simple to stage. Atop Mt Oberlin, 8,200’.

While the location is ridiculously “extra mile”, it is not a big deal in my universe.

What really makes this iconic photo spot buzz is the “little extra”.

The pin is attached to my daypack. The small stones fit in the water bottle netting. Easy peasy.

The planning? Instinctual, habitual. Auto-pilot.
