Lane 8 In Finland 2009
Last night I experimented with a WordPress front page “sticky post”. This allows bloggers to indefinitely keep a certain blog post as the very first post. Like a sticky note.
If it works, regular Lane 8 readers will see the same “Welcome to Lane 8″ post indefinitely. This is really for first time readers to give them a quick look at what Lane 8 is about. All you’ll have to do is simply scroll past it each time you visit, to get the daily Lane 8 post.
Do you experiment? At work? At home? With your diet? With your exercise routine? With your rest? With your motivation?
We all know that experimentation and creativity are the keys to innovation. What grade do you give yourself for practicing what you preach?
Anyone on the honor roll this semester?

USA Team Jersey...Priceless
Last night at Gold’s Gym Orlando in the Dr Phillips area, I meet Pleasant Lewis, the owner of several Central Florida Gold’s Gym facilities.
As a 50-year old, I struggle like everyone else, to find time and motivation to exercise.
This is one of life’s big truths. We all are given the same amount of time. Successful people figure it out, plan for set backs, never give up and they find a million ways to motivate themselves.
And sometimes, if not more often, the thought of, “Is this worth it?”, enters their mind.
Gold’s Gym, Lifestyle Litness, Bally’s, YMCA’s, all struggle too – with finding a way to inspire people to make a lifetime commitment of healthy living.
I proposed to Pleasant that I could help. We’ll see if “Goliath” has any interest in “David”.
Gym owners have the same challenge as their customers – finding time to do the important things that make a difference.

Drumroll please……
Wait. But first, let’s just make sure we’re all on the same page. Two days ago was the anniversary of John Lennon’s death, and the topic of yesterday’s post.
But today’s Lane 8 blog post is not about John Lennon, it’s about motivation.
It’s also about the number one most contagious thing (and greatest success factor) in the world when it comes to motivation.
Are you ready?
Okay, back to the drumroll. Drumroll please…..
The number one most contagious thing in the world is…….ENTHUSIASM!!!!!
Can you hear the echos of some people saying, “That’s it? That’s all you got? You’re wasting my time!”
And others, “Yes, that’s exactly it. Try to do anything well without a mountain of enthusiasm. Seriously, go ahead and try.”
What works best for you?

My son and I went to Gold’s Gym yesterday. It was packed. That’s great to see. Yet even though Gold’s Gym was crowded, the people exercising represent such a small portion of the population.
When I drive to and from work, or on errands, there are occasional joggers along the way. Again, a small portion.
Maybe the ones who exercise regularly are missing the boat. Perhaps they are the crazy ones. Wasting their time on the frivolous pursuit of a sound body. Not a perfect body. A sound body.
Wasting their time and energy by rearranging their schedules to make exercise fit. Passing on “delicious” foods, or skipping second helpings, in an effort to practice healthy moderation.
What’s wrong with that small portion of the population? What a bunch of self-indulgent individuals. They remind me of the people on the airplane who put the oxygen mask on first, before offering to help the person next to them.

Lane 8 @ 2009 World Championships
Lane 8 at 2009 World Championships in Lahti, Finland.
That’s “Jack”, my son’s Teddy Bear. He has three exactly alike. He got them as gifts years ago. The collar is actually inscribed “Jack”.
Our son was born in August 2000. My Dad, Jack Noel, passed on, April 2001.
My Father, and our son, never met. We were two months away from our trip to Pennsylvania when the phone call came, “They’re giving your dad three days”.
So, “Jack” the bear, has traveled extensively. He’s the one with two torn ears. The other “Jacks” are in near perfect condition. Our son was gracious enough to let the “tug-o-war with our yellow Lab” Jack travel.
Find a million ways, gimmicks, tricks – whatever it takes – to stay motivated. Jack is simply one of them.

Did you go for a walk (or exercise) yesterday?
Did you eat sensibly?
Did you read anything that inspired or motivated you?
Did you think about anything that inspired or motivated you?
Did you take some sort of action, different from your usual?
Did you get adequate rest (way under-rated) yesterday?
Did you consider how you’ll stay committed until you die?
Did you have fun yesterday?
Did you do at least one thing that scared you?
Nine yes answers means you lived in the moment. Less than that is, well, less than that.
I only got eight. Adequate rest has been elusive. Which reminds me, nap time.

It’s easier to exercise and eat sensibly during:
- Youth – the full pressure of job, Family, mortgages is unknown
- Mating season – (once we’ve mated, what’s the motivation?)
- Wake up calls – motivating because of glaring consequences
The reality? In the big scheme of life, youth lasts say 20 years, then fades quickly.
Humans are born to mate, like all living creatures. Wake up calls may take a lifetime before they start arriving.
It’s all the other times in our lives that are the real challenge, the real key. Look around people.
Like I suggested a while back, “If aliens found Earth and gave us a pass/fail health grade, what would we get”?

It’s amazing how difficult it is to stay focused over the long haul.
We’ve all seen people get motivated, set, and then achieve big health goals. And then some time later, they fail. They regress, almost predictably.
There’s a missing link. Staying there.
That’s where I come in. You will see, from my own struggle in real time, the simple secrets to long-term success. It amazes me how viral the right thing can become.
But you’re gonna have to want to follow. I can’t make you. It’s completely up to you. Always has been. Always will be. Dream big. Get there. STAY THERE!

On the drive to Victory Martial Arts “Safety Demonstration” (recruiting) yesterday, I reminded our son there was no expectation that he enroll and take lessons.
All the children participated, even the first timers. Our son eagerly lined up. Surprisingly, two of his friends are members there and graciously welcomed him into the atmosphere.
Off to a great start and then somewhere in the middle it got more intense and he felt uncomfortable with his skill level, and returned to the audience with me.
I could not have been more proud. He tried something. He did his best. I didn’t push him, even though I could have. He’s nine. How hard do you push yourself? He’ll get were he needs to go. Will you?

Maybe today is the day our son finds a physical activity that interests him. He is great on exercising his Mind. Great with his Spirit. Decent on Money.
Body? Well, he has a keen understanding of nutrition for a nine-year old. Much better than most adults.
Yesterday, after we pulled away from Twistee Treat, he asked me to call a number. He said the first ten callers get a free t-shirt.
He passed the flyer up to me in the driver’s seat. At the stoplight I quickly scanned it.
We were the fourth caller. So today we go to Victory Martial Arts for a children’s safety demonstration, a t-shirt, and maybe something else.
