Find A Million Ways?

Saturday, February 13th, 2010

Yes. If you don’t know what this means, there’s still hope for you.

There are hundreds of ideas here at Lane 8.

But they are of no use if you don’t do something, like read them.

Here’s today’s biscuit.

Lane 8 In Finland 2009

Lane 8 In Finland 2009

Last night I experimented with a WordPress front page “sticky post”. This allows bloggers to indefinitely keep a certain blog post as the very first post. Like a sticky note.

If it works, regular Lane 8 readers will see the same “Welcome to Lane 8″ post indefinitely. This is really for first time readers to give them a quick look at what Lane 8 is about.  All you’ll have to do is simply scroll past it each time you visit, to get the daily Lane 8 post.

Do you experiment?  At work?  At home?  With your diet? With your exercise routine? With your rest? With your motivation?

We all know that experimentation and creativity are the keys to innovation. What grade do you give yourself for practicing what you preach?

Anyone on the honor roll this semester?

Just Do It

Just Do It

Do you know your blood pressure? And do you know your resting heart rate?  How often do you check?  Do you know how and why you have the numbers you do?

Also known as a no-brainer, putting it off and being afraid to know are not good. I check it virtually every time I’m in a Wal-Mart or Publix Grocery Store, for free, at one of those testing stations.

What would happen to your results if you walked five days each week, fitting in 15-30 minutes (or more) each time? And what would happen if you did that for five years in a row?

Last night’s results at Wal-Mart:

How Big Should Your Goal Be?

Hayward Field 200903

If your goal isn’t impossible, you’re not reaching high enough.

Hang in there if you are struggling.  Odds are, you are.

I know I sure am. Ran once last week. Once! How is that possible?

So here we are, another week.  Yesterday, I swore there would be time for a run. After delivering four keynote speeches yesterday, each to a different audience, exhaustion took on a whole new meaning. No run.

Today is another day…. for all of us.  Good luck.  Do not give up!

Know Your Numbers

Know Your Numbers

Did you know that if you don’t know these numbers (below), there are people like me who question your intelligence?

Do you know your:

  • Body weight
  • HDL & LDL cholesterol
  • Blood pressure
  • Resting heart rate
  • Triglycerides
  • BMI (body mass index)

These are the bare minimum numbers you should know and manage. If you feel uncomfortable with today’s tone, good.

You can wait for your wake up call, or you can anticipate it and manage it before it gets out of control. People who nag you about your health love you.

You knew that right?

What Motivates Them?

What Motivates Them?

Are your 2010 Health and Fitness goals still burning inside you?

Or has the fire of your resolution started to cool?

Or maybe there’s a feeling of being somewhere in the middle – not on fire and not ready to quit, but stuck.

Today, simply by looking around you everywhere, you will see that the hardest thing to do is to be a great example.

Why is that?

Poison or Passion?

Poison or Passion?

“Be willing to be uncomfortable. Be comfortable being uncomfortable.  It may get tough.” 2006 Fortune Cookie

A Lane 8 reader commented recently that part of her motivation, as she was training for a Marathon, came from a fortune cookie saying.

Had to read it several times.

Each time, it got better.  Each time it had more power. Each time it made indomitable will seem more like an antidote than a pain.

Be willing to be uncomfortable.

Be comfortable being uncomfortable.

Body

Body

Hello everyone. Hope you had a healthy week.  It’s challenging isn’t it?

Diet and exercise.  Sounds so simple.

Then why are we an obese society? An unhealthy society? Why?

Can someone help explain why this is so, and even more compelling, why we as a society, just put our heads in the sand and pretend like it doesn’t exist?  Why we pretend like it’ll go away if we ignore it long enough?

It’s a grand wish that our son (9) will get and stay healthy as a lifetime goal. With Inflammatory Bowel Disease, he’s 20 times more likely to develop colon cancer than the average person.

Last time I looked, colon cancer is bad news.

Lane 8 is a metaphor for life.  For trying your best to do important things – like lead a healthy life.

And it started over a decade ago, with me running one mailbox a day for a week.

As my health improved, my desire to maintain it became harder to find.

I Can Fly

I Can Fly

Were you ever a kid?

Loaded question, right?  Of course.  We all were. So what’s the point?

The point is there’s a more important question, “Are you still a kid?”

Let’s assume we all say, “Yes, I’m still a kid at heart.”

Good, because kids dream of being a super hero, or being saved by a super hero.  Remember?  Well guess what?  If you are looking for a place to find your motivation, consider being a super hero.

Did You?

Be Well. Are You? Will You?

Be Well. Are You? Will You?

Did you exercise yesterday?

Did you eat mostly healthy food?

Do you plan on doing it again today?

Excellent.

If you answered no to the questions, today’s another day.

If not you, who?  If not today, when?

Are you getting this?  Or is it getting old?

If it’s getting old, so are you.
